Coastal Plains Permaculture

What is Permaculture?

Permaculture is an ethics based design system for creating sustainable and abundant communities. Permaculture is the combined words of 'permanent culture' or 'permanent agriculture,' and based on the idea that we all need food to survive. Bill Mollison and David Holmgren developed the concept of Permaculture in the early 1970's in response to the environmental degradation and resource complications that were gripping the world at that time. With the growing awareness of the converging crises of resource depletion, species extinction and climate change, Permaculture has once again surfaced as a possible solution to these twenty-first century challenges.

Permaculture is based on the ethics: care for humans, care for the Earth, share the surplus, and every being has intrinsic value. A set of principles guides the design process, which may incorporate such elements as renewable energy, green building, agriculture, aquaculture, water harvesting, and vermiculture, to name a few. No two designs are identical as each one is tailored to the unique features of the property and living styles of the owners.
